is important as well. That is why thesesoaps are not milled,
but made them by hand in small batches to insure the highest
of quality. The process is labor intensive and uses the very
finest of ingredients. Not all hand crafted soaps are created
equal. To KreamySoaps hand crafting means, no pre-made
soap base, no melt and pour, no milling, no private label
manufacturer.

Essential Oil Blends for Your Pet

Young Living essential oils has created some oil blends that can be helpful in your pet's health.
Remember to dilute the oils - 1 - 3 drops per ounce of jojoba or grapeseed oil.
  • Thieves is perfect for attending to minor skin and dental issues.
  • Melrose when used in conjunction with R.C. and Raven, Melrose provides respiratory support. It can also be used on minor skin issues if Thieves cannot be tolerated.
  • R.C. is ideal for respiratory and urinary tract support. R.C. is practical for cats that require bladder fortification, which does not respond to conventional therapy. Pair with Raven for added support.
  • Raven is also utilized for respiratory and urinary tract support, Raven is more powerful than R.C. Combining these oils are highly effective.
  • Di-Gize is wonderful for the gastrointestinal system. Add nutmeg and ginger essential oil for additional support.
  • Peace & Calming for stress, fear or anxiety. Peace and Calming can be used to calm a pet. If the pet is injured, Peace & Calming can relax the animal enough to administer other treatments. This blend can also be used on cats who are resistant to other forms of treatment for urinary problems or excessive grooming resulting from stress.
  • Purification is useful for external parasites such as fleas, ticks and mosquitos.
  • M-Grain provides relief from head discomfort resulting from sinus pressure.
  • PanAway is valuable relief for the discomfort and relaxing the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It works particularly well for pets with osteoarthritis. Using a moist towel over the area increases the effectiveness of the oils.
  • Relieve It is especially beneficial for relieving discomfort and can be alternated with PanAway.

Essential Oils in the Garden

I became interested in essential oils because of love of good fragrance. Soon I learned that there was more to essential oils than good clean smell.
*There are the amazing health benefits of these oils. Essential oils can help with things like headache, burns, upset stomach.
*Are you aware that there are oils that you can use in cooking. Try adding a drop of an herbal oil to that recipe instead of the herb in a bottle.
*My newest discovery - essential oils in the garden. Essential oils can help rid the garden of pests and weeds as well as make a healthy compost. Spring is the time to rekindle our relationship with the garden. Whatever you're growing it's important, whenever possible, to keep harsh chemicals away from your plants. Harsh chemicals harm the environment and can be harmful to your family and pets. Here are some tips that can help you grow a beautiful garden with green essential oils. 1. For an effective bug repellent, fill a 24-oz spray bottle with water and add 2 - 3 drops of oregano, basil or thyme essential oil. To add zip to this green bug repellent, blend a clove of garlic and add to the solution with 2-tsp. insecticidal soap (add soap last). Spray this solution on or near infected plants. 2. Apply cinnamon essential oil as an herbicide to get rid of weeds. Take care to apply only to the weeds. 3. If you grow lavender, add the cuttings to the compost heap. Its a wonderful compost material and soil amendment.

Ever Wondered About Face & Body Soaps?

What makes a soap a good soap?

The only difference between some "natural" soaps and soaps that you buy at the drugstore are packaging and a vegetable base. Many contain synthetic fragrance, artificial colors and preservatives.

Usually, the first thing we do to choose a soap is to smell it. A good fragrance will get us to buy. But there is more to soap than scent. What the soap is made out of - the base is the most important aspect of soap.

Did you know that very few companies make their own soap? In fact, most soaps on the market are made by 5 independent soap makers. Of those 5 only 3 make their own soap base. This all means the many soaps share the same base.

In the natural products industry, more and more companies are making their own soaps and soap base. These are usually "kitchen based" companies. There are two excellent companies that I know about Kreamy Soaps and Spirits soaps. Natural means - nothing artificial, including the fragrance. Both of these companies use pure, high-quality essential oils.

Since the late 18th century in France the process of making a soap base was mixing fat with sodium hydroxide (lye); this process is call saponification. Most soaps are made from animal fat. Unless the bar says "vegetable base" the product is from tallow or animal fat.

After the saponification process, the soap base is dried into a powder which is put into bags and wait to be mixed with those good smelling ingredients for soap.

Vegetable based soaps may use palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil or other vegetable based oil. Did you know that true Castile soap is made from olive oil in the Castile region of Spain? Make sure that is what you are getting.

If the manufacturer adds additional oil or fat (like lanolin) to the soap base, a superfatted soap is created.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Odor Limits - Where Scents Make Sense

The Esther M. Klein Art Gallery at the Science Center in Philadelphia, PA is having a multimedia exhibition titled Odor Limits from May 9 to June 28. This exhibition explores the potential of smell to define our experiences.

The exhibit is presented through a collaboration between University City’s Science Center and Monell Center the works exhibited demonstrate how scent can prompt thought-provoking insights into cultural differences, environmentalism, personal identity, spirituality and the philosophy.

Not only can the scent and chemistry of herbs impact our lives, but also the scents of a person, or a neighborhood, or regions of the world. All these scents tell us something and do things for us.

Oregano Essential Oil

Wondering what other uses there may be for that Oregano essential oil in the frittata recipe?

Oregano (Origanum compactum)* is one of the most powerful and versatile essential oils. It contains strong immune-enhancing and antioxidant properties and supports the respiratory system. This is a strong antiseptic, antibacterial, douche, anti-viral, fungicidal, parasiticide.

An excellent oil for flavoring food and can be substituted for the dry or fresh herb (1 d = 1 tsp dry).

Oregano is a strong, spicy, herby-scented oil and is a powerful antiseptic, bacteria killer and virucide. May be used internally (1 drop in a spoon of honey or agave) immediately upon feeling the flu or for treating all sorts of internal infections, digestive problems, flatulence (although Peppermint oil is better). It is used externally on parasites such as scabies and diluted for head lice. It can be inhaled for respiratory problems, asthma, bronchitis, viral and bacterial pneumonia.

Oregano is widely researched for its potential treatment of viral diseases.

Dilution recommended for both topical and internal use. Dilute before using on sensitive areas such as the face, neck, genital area, etc. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid using on infants and very small children.

Attributes of Basil Essential Oil

Now that you have read the frittata recipe you're probably wondering what other uses there are for Basil and Oregano essential oils. This blog will discuss Basil.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum)* has a strong, spicy aroma and can refresh the mind, soothe the body, and help restore mental alertness during times of fatigue. Basil may soothe stress, depression, and mental fatigue especially when mixed with Epsom salts for a bath. When applied topically, basil can relax tired, aching muscles. Generally used as an antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, pain reliever, decongestant of the veins and pulmonary arteries, and antibacterial.

Mix Basil, Lavender and Rosemary and rub into the hair roots to stimulate hair growth. If the mixture is too strong it can be diluted by half with Jojoba oil, which has the reputation of dissolving the clogging debris from the hair root follicles allowing oxygen to get in, further improving hair growth.

Recently, diluted Basil oil has shown promise in treating herpes and shingles.

Basil essential oil may also sharpen your sense of smell when inhaled and is a wonderful addition to favorite recipes that call for this herb.

How to use: Apply to tip of nose, on temples and on location of stings and bites. For mental fatigue, inhale first, and then apply to crown of head, forehead, heart and navel.

Dilution recommended for both topical and internal use. Dilute before using on sensitive areas such as the face, neck, genital area, etc. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid using on infants and very small children.

Healthy Spinach Frittata with Essential Oils

In my spring newsletter, Aromatic Remedies, I gave a recipe using essential oils for a fabulously flavorful spinach frittata. Its printed below for those who didn't see it.

Healthy Spinach Frittata*

2 Tbsp olive oil

1 drop basil essential oil

1 drop oregano essential oil

1 bunch green onions, chopped

2 cloves garlic, chopped

10-oz bag spinach

6 eggs

salt

pepper

1/3 c plain yogurt

4 oz feta cheese, crumbled

In a sauté pan, mix olive, basil, and oregano oils. Add green onions and garlic, and sauté on medium heat until tender. Add spinach in small bunches until wilted and heated through. Set aside. Whisk eggs, salt, and pepper together. Add yogurt to egg mixture and mix thoroughly. Drain spinach and place in a nonstick cake or pie pan. Pour egg mixture over the spinach and gently mix. Add feta and bake in a 350o F oven for 20 minutes, or until firm. Let cool slightly, slice and serve with fresh cut tomatoes. Makes 8 slices.

Why use herbal essential oils? The essential oil carries the pure chemical properties of the plant - you're getting the pure essentials. And, if kept properly, essential oils do not deteriorate like processed, dehydrated or even fresh herbs.

Note: Recipe can be made in an ovenproof frying pan.

Lavender and the Stress of the Holidays

December is certainly a stressful month no matter what your holiday tradition AND on top of that it’s the end of the year – yikes!! In some ways it may seem as if you’re putting the expectations of an entire year into this one month.

When that stress is overwhelming here’s a solution. Take a cup of Epsom salts, put 8 – 10 drops of therapeutic grade lavender essential into the salts and stir around so that the oils are absorbed by the salts. Run a warm bath, dissolve the salts in the bath water. Dim the lights, light a few candles and pop into the bath – ahhhhhhhhhhh. Take a few deep inhales of the lavender scent which will work on your limbic system to relax you. When you’re done dry off put on some jammies and off to a relaxing sleep.

The reason for putting the oil in the Epsom salts is that the oils do not just float to the top of the water but are absorbed by the salts and mix with the water. The salts also help provide some detoxifying.

I recommend and use Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils. They are pure and reliable. Check them out at my essential oils page.
